EquaGel Cushions
Comfortable, durable and requiring no complicated set-up the EquaGel range of cushions are an excellent seating option within a wide range of facilities ranging from acute care, community and residential care to use within equipment loan pools.
EquaGel Cushions use column buckling technology to redistribute the weight of the seated patient over a wider surface area to reduce interface pressures and protect the tissue beneath the ischial tuberosities from pressure damage.
The cushion is made from a dry-polymer gel which is almost rubbery to the touch. The honeycomb lattice of this gel has high tensile and compression strength which is referred to as “column buckling”. Each wall of gel is capable of supporting a pre-engineered load and when that threshold is exceeded, the wall buckles under and passes the weight to the surrounding walls for support. This “buckling and weight-passing” happens instantly and repeatedly until the maximum surface area of weight is evenly supported by largely equalised pressure.
Applied to seat cushions, the narrow pressure points of the ischium and coccyx are allowed to buckle into the cushion without resistance while the broad areas of the buttocks and legs are supported evenly. The areas most likely to develop pressure injury are allowed to float nearly pressure free within the pad while the body weight is distributed evenly across the cushion.
The EquaGel Cushion is different from conventional gels in that it has an open lattice design which permits moisture transport away from the skin/cushion interface
For use in acute care hospitals, EquaGel Cushions can be supplied with a Dartex cover which is waterproof, completely sealed, vapour permeable cover and ensures ease of cleaning to Infection Control Standards.
